Children + Sport activity = Foundation of Wellness

Growing up I always heard my father say, “Train a child in the way they should go and when they are older they will not depart from that way.”

Being young  didn't understand. Now I understand how that philosophy is true in many ways, but lets focus our attention on the idea that a child who builds a foundation in fitness will not depart from that way in their older years.

To begin with lets see what some experts have to say Anne Lamb of Touch Physical Therapy published an article this passed Friday speaking of this very topic. She started the article off with some very interesting facts.

“Childhood obesity has increased more than four times among those ages six to 11. More than 23 million, about one of every five, children and teenagers in the U.S. (ages two through 19) are obese or overweight.” (Lamb)

That percentage of obese children is very depressing, but how do we as parents, community and nation fight the onslaught of the steady increasing nonactive, “carboholic”  children of this next generation?

SPORTS!

As a former teacher, collegiate coach, and strength & conditioning coach the struggles I've seen with weight control on all levels mostly stem from the individual’s up bringing.  The individual’s genetic make up and nutrition play a huge role in their weight control also, but there is a high percentage of teens who will never have to step on the battlefield of obesity if them with the help of their parents follow these two rules.  Portion control and be a multi-sport athlete for as long as possible.

“A new study shows that teens who play on three or more sports teams are up to 39% less likely to be obese.” (Warner)

So parents and easy way to help fight obesity is sports.

Until next time!
