THE CARBOHYDRATE BATTLE
FAT! FAT! FAT! WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?!?!
Fat is: “The more technical term for body fat is adipose tissue, with individual cells being called adipocytes (adipo = fat ; cyte = cell). In humans, the primary type of fat cell is called white adipose tissue, or WAT, so named because of its color (it’s actually sort of a milky yellow).” (McDonald)
Where dose fat come from?
Fat comes from stored energy, energy stored from carbohydrates. Carbs = Energy/Fuel
The carbohydrate battle is very prevalent in our culture and country. Excessive intake of fats/carbohydrates not only make the United States of America the second fattest country in close second behind Mexico, but arguably can be linked to the top three out of four causes of death in the USA.
1. Diseases of heart
2. Malignant neoplasms (cancer)
3. Chronic lower respiratory diseases (such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma)
4. Cerebrovascular diseases (stroke) (Gupta)
America is obsessed with carbohydrates, if you don't know what one is check out the video we put together of some of our clients after being asked, “what is your favorite carbohydrate.” Or check out the Simple and Complex Carbohydrate List posted below.
Although the food pyramid recommends over 300 carbs per day (which is a lot in my opinion) there is a difference between good and bad carbs.
Good vs. Bad Carbs
“Good” carbohydrates are those high in nutrients, such as fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals. Examples of healthy carbs include whole grains, such as whole-grain bread, brown rice, quinoa, whole-grain cereal and whole-wheat pasta, legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, milk and yogurt. “Bad” carbohydrates are often high in sugar and contain few beneficial nutrients. Carbs you should limit or avoid include refined grains, such as white bread, white rice and regular pasta, sweets, baked goods and sugary drinks. (Coleman)
Carbohydrates are not the enemy at all, but let us be conscious of our decision in the amount and portion size.
